Report On Selected Translation Of Dear Life Stories

This paper centers on solving the problem of balance between meaning and form in the translation of three short stories of Dear Life Stories in three aspects:the translation of the title, the dash, and lyrics and poems.Dear Life Stories, from which three stories:In Sight of the Lake (page217-232), The Eye (page257-270) and Dear Life (page299-319) are taken as the source text, is a collection of short stories of Alice Munro, a Canadian writer and the2013Nobel Prize of Literature winner. The contents of these three short stories are the life experiences in different period of different female characters, namely childhood of The Eye and Dear Life and senior years of In Sight of the Lake. These three stories are full of distinctive style, special use of punctuations, dash, in particular and use of lyrics and poem, which makes it more difficult to achieve the balance between meaning and form.By analyzing the typical examples in the translation, this paper adopting the approaches of supplement, replacement and omission to achieve the balance between meaning and form. It suggests that meaning overweighs form in translation and form should be changed to achieve meaning if necessary.
