The research object of the master’s thesis is Sail Tzu Chlng: Elementary Chineseby Herbert Allen Giles who is the British famous Sinologist in the19th century. Thebook was redacted based on Chinese traditional primers San Tzu Ching in1899,andpublished in1900. The book was provided for the westerners to learn Chinese at thattime,so the content mainly dominated by Chinese characters teaching and culturalinterpretation. It is rich in contcnt,brief in form, and easy to understand. Theexplanation of structure of Chinese characters is clear containing sound、form andmeaning three elements; The culture added is rich and easy to understand. Besidesthat, the author Giles corrected a lot of content of different versions of translationbefore which he thought are wrong so that the learners could understand correctly. Sothe book would be the best translation at that time.This article is divided into five chapters, The ifrst chapter is introduction, whichexplains th’e papers research object、research significance、research status, introducesresearch methods、study theories and corpus sources, summarizes Herbert Allen Gilesand his books.The second chapter discusses Giles’ studying and compiling to San Tzu Ching,Through the comparison with other English versions before, we can see theimprovement and creation. It has two characteristics: the structural analysis ofChinese characters and cultural interpretation. And the chapter analyses mainly therich Chinese culture in the book.The third chapter analyzes in detail the Chinese characters teaching of the book,Through the analysis to the content of the book, Analyzing the characteristics of itsteaching of Chinese characters,to focuse on analysing further his primary Chinesecharacter teaching———components teaching method, and finally,through theteaching material which is typical to teach Chinese characters as focus, to sum upGil’ess thoughts of Chinese characters teaching.The forth chapter analyzes in brief Giles’s main Chinese textbooks, we can knowthe development of his Chinese language teaching-thoughts,which finally is thatsentences are should considered as the basic units of language teaching, words are thecomponens to make sentences, and the Chinese charactcrs arc the foundation.The iffth chapter is the concluding chapter, which reaffirms the crcation of thebook’s compilation style, summarizes the special features of the book’s Chinese characters teaching and culturc teaching, and evaluates the primary Chinese teachingthoughts of Giles.
