Rhythm is a fixed rule in life and natural world. It exists in all sorts ofmotions which come from everything existing in this world, no matter alive or lifeless.In art field, rhythm means a movement that produced by repetition of the changes fromvision or auditory factors. Compared with movie, rhythm is a more necessary element inanimation due to the limitation on producing methods. As a result, since the day it wasborn, animation is made to be an art form with intense rhythm controlling. As the mostimportant way of expression in the art of movie and TV, we can’t study the law of thisart with rhythm being ignored.Since the true artistry of movie and TV is based on a wide recognition of audiencewho is the final receiving terminal of communication and also the final tester andexperiencer of the rhythm structure in a movie. The value of movie and TV art isrealized only through the approval of audience. Thus, the study on the art of movie andTV should be based on the psychological need of audience. And this need should belearned from the mental activity of audience. Hence, this thesis attempts to argue therelationship between audience psychology and rhythm and to study how to use rhythmto attract the attention of audience.The first chapter of this thesis is a summarize of current study, background andmeaning on this topic. The second chapter focuses on the concept, the origination andfunction of rhythm whereas the third chapter analyzes the genres of rhythm, which aremainly plot rhythm, visual rhythm, lens rhythm and aural rhythm, in movie and TV artby excellent movies as examples. The fourth chapter is about an exploration on thepsychological function of rhythm. It argues the meaning of this study and therelationship between rhythm and audience psychology. The last chapter focuses on theinfluence on audience psychology from various kinds of rhythm.
