"Pai An Jing Qi" Time Adverbs

“Pai An Jing Qi” is a vernacular novel written by Ling Mengchu of theMing dynasty. And together with its sequel the “Er Ke Pai An Jing Qi”, they two areconsidered as the masterpieces of the Ming dynastic novels. As the novel was written byMr. Ling Mengchu in the colloquial language of that time, it is peculiar in languagestyle compared to contemporary novels written in the classical Chinese. And as a result,it is regarded as an important source of corpora for the study of the vocabulary of Mingdynasty. Up to the present, the academic circle of the Chinese have made some sort ofachievements in the study of “Pai An Jing Qi”, but it is still not enough, some furtherresearch work needs to be done.We mainly deployed three kinds of study methods: the synchronic descriptionmethod, the diachronic comparison method and the mathematical statistical methods.We combined the dynamic research with the static description, the generalsummarization with the internal analysis, and tried to do the study from multiple angles.The article includes several parts:The first chapter is introduction. This part mainly introduced the information ofLing Mengchu and “Pai An Jing Qi”. Then the existing research results and theimportant significance of the study of “Pai An Jing Qi”.The second chapter mainly discussed the meaning of time adverbs, and told thedifference between time adverbs and time mums. After all these, we made aclassification study on the time adverbs.The third chapter is a static description of the “Time Adverbs”. We first explainedand analyzed every time adverb from the aspect of semantic features and grammaticalfunctions. Then we made a simple statistic, so that we can have a general idea of timeadverbs.The forth chapter we made a diachronically study of the time adverbs in the “PaiAn Jing Qi”, tracing their development trail from a dynamic angle. We identified thetime when each individual adverb initially came into being according to the analysis ofcorpora from the CCL porpus and the Chinese Dictionary.In the fifth chapter, we classified all the time adverbs into different types inaccordance with their internal structures. And then we made a summary of the features of each type.The sixth chapter tried to summarize the features of time adverbs in “Pai An JingQi”, we found that the time adverbs system was stable and the dual tone words wasdeveloped. And there is another noticeable phenomenon: some time adverbsoccasionally appeared in low frequency.The seventh chapter is a conclusion. It summarized the whole article and made aconclusion.
