This is a translation report; the translation material is the first to the sixth section and the ninth section in Chapter5of Guangxi History and Cultural Concise Reader. This book followed the historical context, used vivid words and concise sentences to depict panoramically the splendid history and culture of Guangxi in personage, scenery, nationality, folk-custom, culture, art, and historical events. As time goes on, China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) has been held in Nanning for9years and Beibu Gulf Economic Zone was approved by the state, Guangxi is attracting the attention of the whole country and even the world. Therefore, this translation practice not only can improve my translation ability, but also do some help promote Guangxi folk culture and throws a sprat to foreign propaganda translation of Guangxi folk culture.There are four chapters in this report. Chapter One introduces the research background of this report, presents a brief introduction to Chapter5of Guangxi History and Cultural Concise Reader, and the writing process of the translation practice and report. Chapter Two introduces the previous research results of translation on folk custom, and the theoretical foundation of the translation practice, including Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory and translation methods of Friedrich Schleiermacher and Lawrence Venuti. Chapter Three is the case analysis with various translation methods and strategies. As the core section, it introduces the search and proper use of parallel texts, translator’s involvement in translation process, and the use of different translation methods and strategies is included in the practice, such as literal translation, free translation, amplification, omission, domestication of language, emptiness and reality combination, words formation, image interpretation method, translation perspective formation, etc. A summary is made in the last chapter, concerning the author’s experience and gains, problems and the insufficiencies in the practice.Based on Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory, and the integrated use of different translation methods and skills, the author analyzes the translation activities. Hope it will give some benefits to those who have interests in folk custom translation.
