This report discusses a translation practice of the three marine stories by Louis Becke, an Australian writer in the19th century. Becke is considered as the best writer about the Pacific in Australia. Based on his personal experience, Becke’s marine stories are vivid and interesting. So far there is neither Chinese translation of these three marine stories, nor scholars discuss the translation experience and problems from the perspective of translation process.Based on language functions’ classification of Peter Newmark Theory, the author in this report analyzes the translated texts’ type, stylistic features, language characteristics, translation principles and approaches. There are four chapters in this report. Chapter One introduces the background and purpose of this report, and presents a brief introduction to the original work. Chapter Two gives an overall analysis of the original work, including the text type, stylistic features and language characteristics based on the language functions’ classification of Peter Newmark’s theory, and determines the guiding principles of using semantic translation and communicative translation alternately. As the core section, Chapter Three focuses on the approaches to doing the translation. They include net information references, words amplification and omission, semantic transformation, words formation, the processing of long and difficult sentences and passive sentences, the translation of rhetorical devices and further polishing to improve the artistic beauty of the translation version. The last chapter is a summary of this report, concerning the author’s translation experience and gains, problems and the insufficiencies in the practice. This translation belongs to literary translation, which should focus on conveying the source message as much as possible while making the translation readable. It is imperative for the translator to possess some solid translation qualities and make use of translation approaches flexibly so as to improve the translation quality and meet the needs of the target readers.
