With the globalization English has become one of the most widely usedlanguages all over the world. Its importance is so self-evident that English is requiredas a compulsory course for all college students. However, the traditional teachingmethod pays too much attention to language itself and examination scores, and thussome students lose their interest in English, especially for sports major students.Generally speaking, sports major students’ English is poor and they are not willing tolearn English. Thus English teaching becomes a difficulty in sports college.Einstein once said,“Interest is the best teacher.” How to stimulate students’interest in English becomes the key of the issue. Through observation andconversation, it is found that music is one of their favorites. If music can be combinedwith English teaching in sports college, it may stimulate their interest, and get betterteaching effect.According to the previous theoretical foundation and research, this paperexplores with an empirical experiment whether music application in English teachingin sports college can arouse students’ interest in English, motivate them to learn andimprove their English level ultimately. The thesis is composed of six sections. Thefirst section is introduction, introducing the background, significance and methods ofthis research, as well as the structure of thesis. The second section is literature review,presenting the status quo of English teaching in sports college, the research of musicand language, music and English teaching at home and abroad, and theoreticalfoundation as well. The third section is research methodology, including researchquestions, subjects, methods, design and criteria of music selection. The fourth sectionis the empirical research, introducing the experimental procedures in detail. The fifthsection is results and analysis. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are applied. The sixth section is the conclusion, consisting of findings, implications, limitationsand suggestions.Thus the conclusion of the research can be drawn that music application inEnglish teaching in sports college can stimulate students’ interest and get effectiveresults. What’s more, students have a positive attitude to this new teaching method. Aslong as it is applied properly, music application in English teaching is a good methodbenefiting for both English teachers and students in sports college.
