Objective:To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of injury prevalence amongmiddle school students, and to investigate the influening factors associated with suchincidence for scientific decision to plan comprehensive intervention measures. Methods:By randomized stratified cluster sampling, a questionnaire survey wasperformed in students of grade7to12from9middle schools in Wuhu, Anhuiprovince, concerning the injury status quo in the past one year. The investigationincluded:1)general information of the students and their family backgrounds;2)theinformation associated with injury and cognition on the accidents;3) injury prevalenceduring the investigation; and4)Junior Eysenck Personality Inventory (JEPI).Results: In a survey of2459junior and senior students, a total of623injuriesoccurred in426subjects(18.7%), in which the boys and girls accounted for21.8%and14.6%, respectively, with statistical difference (P<0.01). Accidental injuryappeared prominent in the total incidences(80.90%), and the top five types of injurywere involved in collision/falls in252studnets (48.46%), sharp/blunt injury in89(17.12%), vehicle accidents in77(14.81%), animal/insect bites in44(8.46%) andburns in39(7.5%). The difference was statistically significant regarding the injuryrates in in different grades, commuting students or boarding students, whether there being regular drinking, educational levels of their parents, family income, whetherthere being a peaceful family relationship and physical address of the family.(P<0.05),yet the ethnic groups showed no statistical difference with respect to theregular smokers, regular Internet users, only one-child and different types of familybackground (P>0.05). The injury wore typical seasonal features, occurred mostcommonly in spring and summer days with a peak in June and July (14.13%,14.61%).The school yards were most risk areas for injuries, accounted for53.93%of allincidences, followed by at home, public places and other grounds. Arising of theinjury had no association with either the students had received any safety educationor recognized that the harm was possibly prevented (P>0.05), but was associated wihthe understanding of accidental injury, and interestingly, the incidences were thelowest in those with rare perceiving of the unexpected injury (P<0.05). JEPI findingssuggested that, though the middle school students in Wuhu area possessed personalityof quietness, being relatively withdrawn, fond of reading, easily anxious and morehonest and reliable, yet they looked immature and inexperienced, with insufficientpersonalities. Multivariate Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that female andolder ages were the protective factors from injuries[OR=0.676(0.539-0.849),0.899(0.837-0.966), respectively].Contrarily, the injuries were predisposing to those with amother of better education poorer family quality relationship, higher householdincome and higher scoring on component of neuroticism[OR=1.176(1.018-1.358),1.450(1.201-1.750),1.205(1.064-1.364),1.316(1.128-1.535), respectively].Conclusions:School authorities should plan comprehensive and effective measuresto prevent injuries of various degrees from happening by means of strengthening thesafey management on campus and establishement of a secure playground on the onehand, and on the other, intensifying the safey education on the physiological andmental nature of the students and injury scopes basis to improve the awareness ofself-protection. In addition, effective and regular communication with the parents shall be necessary, including improvement of the family relationship and cooperative interventions from family members. We are sure that the injuries in middle school students will be reduced and even controlled under the joint efforts of a school, family and society.
