This dissertation aims at observing the translations of legal concepts from theperspectives of legal hermeneutics. The objectives are to demonstrate the influencesand values legal hermeneutics has on the translation of legal concepts, to discuss thetranslation of legal concept, and accordingly to propose some suggestions for thetranslation of legal concepts. The author adopts the methodology of qualitativeresearch to systematically analyze the problem. Methods of synthesizing,exemplifying, deduction, and illustration will be employed to better serve the purposes.To the author’s finding, the subjects and methods or rules of legal hermeneutics haveaffected the connotations and denotations of legal concepts, and moreover thetranslation of legal concepts are influenced by legal hermeneutics through theunderstandings of translators and the translational strategies used in translatingChinese and English legal concepts. The writer has also proposed that in the practiceof the translation of legal concept, translators should stick to the principle ofconsistency to ensure precision and correspondence, and if exact equivalences can befound, then no other work is needed; if not, strategy of literal translation, freetranslation, foreignization and others can be chosen to ensure the agreement withcontexts and styles. This dissertation depends itself on the previous researches; itapproaches legal concept translation from the perspective of legal hermeneutics whichis innovative both to the field of legal translations and of legal hermeneutics.
