Translation Strategies In The English Version Of Ta Tsing Leu Lee

Translation is a communicative action to express information between two kinds oflanguages and cultures; it acts like a bridge to connect different countries by means oftranslation strategies. In the process of translation, which kind of translation strategies shouldbe taken into consideration is always a debatable problem that translators will constantly runinto. Among translation strategies, domestication and foreignization are two major andrepresentative translation strategies. This thesis makes an attempt to discuss the two strategiesand their application in English version of Ta Tsing Leu Lee. Ta Tsing Leu Lee is a systematicCode in the feudal society and it occupies an important position in the process of ancientChinese legal system. The study of its English translation will demonstrate how the foreignerconsiders the Chinese traditional legal culture.This thesis first makes a brief introduction of Ta Tsing Leu Lee and researches of it in thewest and in China. Next, the thesis expounds the domestication and foreignization at homeand abroad before it points out the necessity of making further studies of these two majortranslation strategies. Then, it discusses other translation strategies like literal and freetranslation strategies used in the translating process. In the following sections, the author ofthe thesis continues to deal with factors which may influence the translator’s choice oftranslation strategies: the types of source text, the purposes of translator, readers’ acceptanceand the constraints. Finally, the thesis studies the applications of domestication andforeignization by analyzing typical examples from Ta Tsing Leu Lee translated by GeorgeStaunton in1810.This thesis concludes that domestication strategy is the main trend in thetarget text while these two translation strategies have their respective features and applicablevalues. It is sincerely hoped that this present research will enlighten the readers and makesome contributions to the prosperity of translation studies and translation practice of Englishversion of Ta Tsing Leu Lee.
