Korean vocabulary, according to its origin, can be divided into vernacular word,Chinese characters and loanwords, among which Chinese characters account for thehighest rate. This is because, back in ancient South Korea, Chinese characters werewidely used. Up until now, Chinese characters are still used widely in the news, literaryworks and daily spoken language. Besides, along with the evolution of the Chinesefrom a classical language to vernacular, some archaic words disappeared while somehave been given new meanings. Given different cultural backgrounds, historicaldevelopment and different ideologies between nations, differences in the developmentof words are resulted in. Chinese characters in Korean vocabulary and modern Chinesehave different degrees of similarities and differences which demand our furtherexploration and study.Comparing from the aspect of morpheme, Chinese characters can be divided intoidentical words and shaped words, among which identical words falls into synonymyand homograph while shaped words falls into four categories of words with individualmorpheme replaced, words with contrary morpheme, words with different syllables andcompletely different Chinese words from the aspect of word form structure.The special relationship between the Chinese and Korean vocabulary cansometimes function as a big advantage for Korean students who take Chinese as theirsecond language. This special relationship between the Chinese and Korean vocabularydoes not necessarily exercise positive transfer in Chinese learning of Korean nativespeakers, since sometime it may bring negative transfer. If learners cannot fully makeclear the differences in parts of speech, word meanings and word forms between thetwo languages, misunderstandings and communication failures are prone to occur in theprocess of second language acquisition.Taking syllabus vocabulary in the new version of HSK as research object, thispaper first makes detailed classification of identical words and shaped words.Following this, different types of misunderstandings are analyzed. Finally, effectivepedagogy about vocabulary acquisition for Korean students is explored.This paper consists of six chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, trying tomake clear the research objectives, scope, methods and previous research methods. Thesecond chapter mainly discusses the formation of Korean vocabulary and origin ofChinese characters. Taking syllabus vocabulary in the new version of HSK as linguisticdata, research on identical words in Chinese characters and misunderstandings aboutthem is made in Chapter four so as to analyze their positive transfer and negative transfer. Chapter five discusses what effective teaching methods of vocabulary are andmatters should be paid attention in teaching process. Chapter six is the overallconclusion of this dissertation.
