On Interpretation Of Classical Chinese Poetry From The Perspective Of The Interpretive Theory

This thesis discusses the interpretation of classical Chinese poetry from theperspective of the interpretive theory in combination with the author’s owninterpreting experience. Established in the1980s, the interpretive theory was oncethe guiding theory of interpreting research in the West due to its ever-perfectingframework and unique perspective. It has also exerted a great influence oninterpreting research in China. In recent years, with the deepening of China’s reformand opening up and the increasing of cultural exchanges between the East and theWest, the beauty of traditional Chinese culture has become more and more manifest.In particular, classical Chinese poetry with its rich cultural connotation has gainedworldwide attention. Chinese leaders often quote classical Chinese poetry inintercultural communication, which fully reflects their ability of dealing with anykind of matters by using their traditional culture wisdom proficiently. Yet in themeantime, it has become a most difficult task for interpreters. Hence, properinterpreting of these poems is of great significance in promoting cross-culturalcommunication and enhancing the overall quality of interpretation.This thesis attempts to apply the interpretive theory into the most complicatedtask of interpreting classical Chinese poetry, and proposes five major strategies forinterpreting classical Chinese poetry under the framework of the interpretive theory,namely, general equivalence, paraphrasing, restructuring and omission, retainingcross-cultural awareness and contextual interpreting. Meanwhile, the thesis carriesout a case study based on the author’s own interpreting experience in2013SouthAfrican Expos to discuss the interpretation of classical Chinese poetry in interpretingpractice.
