Abstract/Summary:
During the long history of English education, teacher has always been the leading factor ofeducational process. Recently, as the promotion of college English teaching works, Englisheducation circle has gradually recognized the significance of professional development forteachers, which has become a hot topic for domestic educational world. Researches oncharacteristics and comprehensive discussions on capability and quality have achieved someoutcomes. However, there is no attention on college English teachers especially these teachers ofopen and distance education. Professional promotion of English teachers has a significant impacton educational reformation and development. Though open and distance education teachers aredifferent from teachers of ordinary colleges over the aspects of education objects, academicatmosphere, etc, they also undertake the same task of English education.Based on reading, study, analysis and researches on home and abroad theories, this papertakes Shannxi radio and TV University as an example, expresses detailed discussions onprofessional development for English teachers of open and distance education, with the expect ofproviding references for professional development of China open and distance education Englishteachers as well as giving valuable clues for English education.Based on home and abroad theories, detailed analysis by investigation and interviews,theoretical research method and comparative research method have been implemented for thisresearch. This paper includes six parts: the first part is introduction, introducing researchbackground, significance and structure of the study, etc. The second part is a kind of overview,presenting home and abroad researches on professional development of teachers and gives asummery on concept and connotation of teacher professional development, research onprofessional development and that for open and distance education English teacher. The third partintroduces the research questions, research object, research methodology and questionnaireinvestigation. The fourth part,takes Education Shannxi radio and TV University as an example,presents detailed design and analysis on the major of English teacher included in open anddistance education development. based on a questionnaire investigation, discovers Englishteachers of Open and Distance are underdeveloped in career. The fifth part gives precise analysis and research on optimization of professional development for English teacher over open anddistance education, suggests that it is necessary to enhance the consciousness of teacherprofessional development, pay attention to teaching behaviors of open and distance educationteachers, and lay stress on modern open and distance education theories and applicationknowledge. The sixth part is conclusion that summarizes the all the contents.
