The further implementation of open-door policy and China’s entry into the WTOprovide more opportunities for Chinese enterprises to participate in the world market. Some enterprises have their profiles translated into English so that foreign customerscould get an easy access to the information of the enterprises. However, thetranslation of enterprise profiles, petroleum enterprise in particular, is far fromsatisfactory. Translation problems exist at both linguistic and non-linguistic levels. These problems not only led to the failure of enterprise publicity, but also had a badinfluence on their reputation. Therefore, the quality of the English translation ofenterprise profiles is badly in need of improvement. This paper intends to make ananalysis of the translation of enterprise profiles from the perspective ofSkopostheorie.Skopostheorie offers new sight for translation. According to this theory, translation is an activity with certain purpose. There are three rules in Skopostheorie, namely skopos rule, coherence and fidelity rules. Among these three rules, skopos isthe top rule; the other two rules are subordinated to the skopos rule. Besides, addressee is the most important factor in translation; it is also the presupposed readerof the source text. Therefore, translators should take the addressee and its culturalbackground into account for the sake of accurate translation. This paper made an analysis of the enterprise profile translation from theperspective of Skopostheorie. According to this theory, translation is not merely acode switching between two languages, but an activity with certain purpose. Thepresupposed function and purpose of the target text determine what information ofthe source text should be reproduced in the target text, and what translation methodsare to be taken. In light of Skopostheorie, the author finds out that there are somedifferences between Chinese and English enterprise profiles. What’s more, theculture of the source-text readers and the target-text readers also varies a lot. Therefore, the author suggests that in most cases, some adaptations of the source-textneed to be made to cater for the demands of the target-text. Writing this thesis, theauthor hopes to provide translators new sight for the translation of petroleumenterprise profiles.
