The university period is very important for individuals to form future careerdirection and self-cognition. As a special group in university, national defensestudents are destined to be army men in the future, that means,the university is thebeginning of the career of national defense students. It is an effective way to guidenational defense students to prepare for future career by acquiring their occupationalpsychology characters in this period objectively. Based on possible-selves theory, thisstudy surveyed600national defense students on their work possible-selves andcareer commitment, analyzed the relationship between the two variables. Theconclusions are as following:(1)National defense students’ development level of work possible-selves isabove average. But there are gaps in Hoped-for work self, Expected work self andFeared work self, the whole work possible selves of national defense students maynot be balanced.(2)Significant gender differences are found in grade, parents’ work and parents’educational level on national defense students’ work possible-selves.(3)National defense students’ development level of career commitment is aboveaverage and they pay more attention on social norms factor.(4)Significant gender differences are found in grade, parents’ work and parents’educational level on national defense students’ career commitment.(5)National defense students’ work possible-selves had significant positivecorrelation with career commitment. Work possible-selves is an effective predictiveindex of career commitment.This study suggested that: the country should increase defense publicity,schoolsshould strengthen their vocational guidance to students, parents should develop careereducation to children and students should adjust their self-awareness to adapt to thechange.
