The original text of this translation task stems from The Encyclopedia of PoliceScience. This book reflects the latest development of police science theory and practicein today’s world, including the basic terminology, theories and schools of police science,the main theories of criminology, and their practice in criminal prevention and policing.It contains354entries, of which the translator was responsible for the translation ofentries that respectively begin with letters E, V, and P.This report includes four parts, which are the task description, proceduredescription, case analysis, and summary. The task description and procedure descriptiongive an overall introduction about this translation practice. The case analysis firstlyindicates that the main problem during the translation is how to improve the readabilityof target text; and discusses how to improve the readability through communicativetranslation with examples concerning lexical meaning and sentence structure; thensummarizes the translation strategies in terms of the similar problems. In the translationof an informational text such as encyclopedia, the translator should, from theperspective of communicative translation, flexibly employ the translation skills basedon the accurate delivery of the original message to make the expression of the target textsmooth and fluent, so as to improve the readability of the translation. Finally, theconclusion part sums up the gains and deficiencies during this translation.
