Abstract/Summary:
David Lodge is a prominent British novelist as well as a literary critic. Since1960, he has published15novels,15critical works and certain play scripts and shortstories, including his maiden work The Picturegoers in1960and his latestbiographical novel A Man of Parts in2011. Among his literary works, ChangingPlaces (1975), Small World (1984) and Nice Work (1988), which are also known as the"Campus Trilogy", are the most representative. In his critical works, such as Languageof Fiction (1966), The Modes of Modern Writing (1977) and The Art of Fiction (1992),Lodge expressed his novel theory under the influences of New Criticism, structuralism,Bakhtin’s dialogue theory and practical criticism. Because of his dual identity, hisworks and theories has caught great attention in the researching area, but most of theresearches were one-sided, which just focused on certain aspect of either Lodge’sworks or theories from certain perspective. Based on the results of the former studies, this paper intends to give a systematic comparative analysis between Lodge’s novelsand novel theory. The analysis will mainly concentrate on Lodge’s most representative"Campus Trilogy", and develop from three different points of view: structurearrangements, narrative skills, and film techniques. This kind of comparison betweenLodge’s novels and his own theory can not only help to understand the relationshipbetween practice and critics by pointing out their consistencies and inconsistencies, but also make contribution to the field of David Lodge study in a comprehensive andsystematic way.
