As one of the outstanding novels in modem and contemporary Chinese literature, Thefour generations under one roof gains the high language achievements. With the considerablequantities and diversify, the idioms of this novel reflect their identity and characteristics.Based on the collection of idioms of four generations under one roof, this paper describes andanalyses structures and semantics characteristics of230idioms (without repeating) presentedin the novel by the means of comparison, statistics and cognition.As the parallel saying of two-part allegorical sayings, idoms, proverbs and commonsayings, idioms plays an important role in the vocabulary unit. However, for a long time,there has been a lot of differences in the definition of relevant phrases. Therefore, this paperintroduces the situation of the research on idioms, and defines idioms as the descriptivelanguage unit with the complete structure, stable elements, three or four syllable counts,double layer meaning, intense oral color, distinct emotional color and some rhetoricfunctions.The second part analyses the main source and structure characteristics of “the fourgenerations under one roof ". The materials show that idioms of this novel have extensivesources, including many social and historical terms. Internal classifications of idioms aremade as follows: first, according to the grammar relations between the internal elements; thenclassification is made by if other elements are inserted in idioms. If can, classification is madeby the difference ofelements.The third part analyzes and rhetoric of idioms in the four generations under one roof.Firstly, this part analyzes semantic of idioms of the novel from characteristics and semanticconstitutes. In terms of rhetoric, the paper analyses and compares idioms of Red Mansionsfrom the aspects of functions，regarding that idioms have very good rhetorical effect on theimage labeling, attitude and style functions.The fourth part makes a specific analysis of grammatical function types of idioms andtheir specific functions in the sentence, obtaining that idioms are equal to words and can be each elements of sentence.
