Background: Recently cerebrovascular disease is the first cause of death in China. The active prevention of cerebrovascular disease is particularly important because it has high morbidity and high mortality. At present, the risk factors of cerebral vascular disease such as age, blood lipid, metabolic syndrome have attracted great attention. As a metabolic-connecting diseases, hyperuricemia is closely related to metabolic syndrome. The present study found that uric acid have oxidation effects in vivo, which lead to endothelial cells dysfunction and promote the genesis and progress of cerebrovascular disease. However, hyperuricemia has not been paid attention to in the early prevention of cerebrovascular disease. Cerebral arteriosclerosis is the early pathological changes of cerebrovascular disease, which as a part of systemic artery have the similar pathophysiological changes as peripheral arteries. Therefore, the study of uric acid which conducted important factor in atherosclerosis can provide guidance for the prevention of strokeObjective: To explore the association of hyperuricemia with atherosclerosis and risk factors of atherosclerosis, providing guidance for the prevention of strokeMethods: The study enrolled 841 participants with arteriosclerosis(CAVIā‰„9.0) diagnosed by Cardio-ankle Vascular Index as the Research Group(G1) and 841 cases without arteriosclerosis(CAVI < 9.0) as the Control Group(G2). The differences in clinical parameters including Systolic Blood Pressure, Diastolic Blood Pressure, Total Cholesterol, Triglyceride, High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Body Mass Index, Waist Circumference, Fasting Plasma Glucose and Serum Uric Acid were compared between the two groups. The differences of serum uric acid in the two groups were compared after correcting confounding factors. To study the relationship between hyperuricemia and atherosclerosis and its conventional risk factors. Results: There were significant differences in Waist Circumference, Systolic Blood Pressure, Diastolic Blood Pressure, Triglyceride, High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Fasting Plasma Glucose and Serum Uric Acid between the Research Group and the Control Group(P=0.000). Serum Uric Acid is a risk factor for arteriosclerosis(OR=1.003 Cl95 % 1.002-1.004 P=0.000) after further adjusting for confounding factors. After the data were disaggregated by gender, the relative risk of male and female were 1.004(P=0.000 95%Cl 1.003-1.006) and 1.002(95 %Cl 1.000-1.004 P=0.036)respectively. The Odds Ratio of hyperuricemia between the Research Group and the Control Group is 1.657(P=0.000 Cl95 % 1.311-2.101). UA was positively correlated with the indicators such as age, BMI,WC, SBP, DBP,TG, LDL-C, FPG(R= 0.102 0.223 0.312 0.158 0.106 0.222 0.228 0.108 P=0.000).Conclusions: Serum Uric Acid is closely related to arteriosclerosis except blood lipids, blood sugar, blood pressure and waist circumference and other factors;Uric acid levels are closely related to the risk factors of atherosclerosis and equally promote the genesis and progress of arteriosclerosis,so it is a risk factor of stroke.
