Objective: To observe the outcome of indicators related to the function of Islet β-cell through using invigorating spleen to resolve phlegm therapy to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus with Phlegm-dampness due to deficiency of the spleen Syndrome. Thus, it can provide certain objective indicators and evidence for treating type 2 diabetes by Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM). Methods: Using diagnostic methods in TCM to collect 72 diabetic patients with Phlegm-dampness due to deficiency of the spleen Syndrome among all the Type 2 diabetes inpatients, each patient was given oral glucose tolerance test, HbA1 c and islet function test. Then these patients were divided into treatment group and control group randomly,36 cases in each group. The treatment group patients were given oral medication of Modified Liujunzi decoction combined with western standard treatment at the same time while the control group patients were only given western medicine treatment, all the patients from two groups received three months’ treatment as a course. Recording and collecting the laboratory data from patients before and after giving treatment, including glycosylated hemoglobin(Hb A1c), insulin resistance index, insulin secretion index and △I30/△G30, then using SPSS 19.0 software to analyze the data. Results:1.There were no obvious differences between two groups in proportion of age, gender and course of disease, body mass index(BMI) and blood pressure.2.Comparison of blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin: the levels of blood glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin in the two groups were improved after treatment(P<0.05), the difference between treatment group and control group had statistical significance(P<0.05).3.Comparison of insulin and C-peptide level: the levels of fasting insulin and C-peptide in the two groups were improved after treatment(P<0.05), the difference between treatment group and control group has statistical significance(P<0.05). The levels of 30 min insulin and C-peptide secretion after glucose loading were improved in treatment group(P<0.05),while not in the control group(P>0.05). the difference between treatment group and control group had statistical significance(P<0.05).4.Comparison of HOMA-IR, HOMA-β, △I30/△G30: HOMA-IR in the two groups was improved after treatment(P<0.05), the difference between treatment group and control group had statistical significance(P<0.05). HOMA-β in both groups wasn’t improved after treatment(P>0.05), the difference between treatment group and control group hadn’t statistical significance(P>0.05).△I30/△G30 in the treatment group was improved after treatment( P<0.05), while it didn’t happened to control group, thus, the difference between treatment group and control group had statistical significance( P<0.05). Conclusions: According to clinical statistics result, we can conclude that oral medication of Modified Liujunzi decoction combined with western medicine treatment showed better treatment effects than the treatment only by using western medicine in Type2 Diabetes Mellitus with phlegm-dampness due to deficiency of the spleen syndrome. The result might be correlated with therapy of invigorating spleen to resolve phlegm which improves insulin resistance and increase early-phase insulin secretion.
