Objective: To measure the density of mandibular bone of unilateral complete cleft lip and palate(UCLP) patients by cone-beam computed tomography(CBCT), and to provide reference for the study of the mandibular traits and development characteristics of UCLP patients. Methods: A total of 30 patients with UCLP(20 with mixed dentition and 10 with permanent dentition) were selected as the UCLP group, while 30 non-CLP patients(20 with mixed dentition and 10 with permanent dentition) were selected as control group. To measure the bone density of cortical and cancellous bone of condyle area, mandibular angle area, mental foramen area and middle area of mandible, analysis the symmetry of mandibular bone density between cleft side and non-cleft side, and compare the bone density between UCLP and non-CLP patients, between mixed and permanent dentition period. The data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 software package.Results:1.The symmetry of mandibular bone density between cleft side and non-cleft side in UCLP groupThe density of cortical bone of mandibular angle areas on cleft side were obviously lower than that on non-cleft side in UCLP patients with permanent dentition(P<0.05); The other comparisons of cortical and cancellous bone between cleft side and non-cleft side had no statistically differences in UCLP patients with permanent dentition(P>0.05). The density of cortical and cancellous bone of all mandibular areas between cleft side and non-cleft side had no statistically differences in UCLP patients with mixed dentition(P>0.05).2. The comparisons of mandibular bone density between UCLP group and control groupwhen compared UCLP patients with mixed dentition with its control group, the density of cortical bone of condyle and mandibular angle areas on cleft side were obviously lower in UCLP group(P<0.05); when compared UCLP patients with permanent dentition with its control group, the density of cortical and cancellous bone of mandibular angle areas on cleft side were obviously lower in UCLP group(P<0.05);Except these, all the other comparisons had no statistically differences(P>0.05).3. The comparisons between patients with mixed dentition and patients with permanent dentition of UCLP group. The mandibular bone density of cortical and cancellous bone of UCLP patients with permanent dentition were obviously higher than that with mixed dentition(P<0.05).Conclusion:1. The density of cortical bone of mandibular angle area on cleft side is lower than that on non-cleft side in UCLP patients with permanent dentition.2. The development of mandibular condyle and mandibular angle areas on cleft side of UCLP patients are inhibited in different degrees, and the bone density become lower, especially in mandibular angle area.3. The mandibular bone density of UCLP patients are significantly increased along with the growth and development, in according with the general rule of growth and development.
