Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes and complication rates of the surgery operated on diabetic patients with lumbar degenerative disease. Methods: Retrospectively analyzed from January 2011 to October 2015 surgical treatment of lumbar degenerative disease with a total of 106 cases. These patients were divided into two groups: diabetic group(n=53) and non-diabetic group(n=53). The clinical indicators were used to evaluate the impact of diabetes on the results of surgical treatment of lumbar degenerative disease. The observed indicators include operative time, blood loss, postoperative complications, hospitalization time, total cost of hospitalization, revision rate, fusion rate, pre-operative and postoperative 12-month follow-up VAS score and JOA score. Results: Two groups of patients in the surgical site infection, hospitalization time and the total cost of hospitalization were statistically significant(P<0.05). There were no significant difference in the risk of operative time, and blood loss, postoperative complications, fusion rate, and the VAS score and JOA score(P>0.05).Conclusions: These results suggest that diabetic patients take a higher risk once accepting the degenerative lumbar spine surgery than the non-diabetic patients. Diabetes increases the risks of surgical site infection, hospitalization time and the total cost of hospitalization after spinal surgery.
