Objective:To understand the feeding methods for 6~23 month-old-infants and caretakers’nutritional knowledge, attitude, behavior in poor areas of minority groups in Yunnan Province, including Lushui and Mojiang district. Then, analyze the level of their understanding about the appropriate feeding method and nutritional knowledge. Methods:Using stratified cluster sampling method to do a research study in Lushui and Mojiang district which consisted of 9 villages,549 of 6~23 month-old-infants were chosen as a research objective by conducting the questionnaires, and this survey was primarily involved with feeding method of parents or caretakers, breastfeeding, complementary foods, and caretakers" nutritional knowledge. The SPSS 17.0 software was used for statistical analysis.Results:1. Basic Condition of Infants:Among being investigated of 549 infants, there were 279 boys and 270 girls, which were 50.8% and 49.2%, respectively. Based on infants’age by month, it was divided as 6~11 month-old-infants (176 cases),12~17 month-old-infants (202 cases) and 18~23 month-old-infants (171 cases), which were 32.1%,36.8% and 31%, respectively. The comparisons of each age group have no statistical differences in gender (P>0.05). In these 549 cases of infants, the caretaker as parents was 70.9%, and 27.9% was grandmother or maternal grandmother. Moreover,76% of caretaker was home workers, and the level of education was high school (42.1%) or primary school (27.9%).2. Status of Breastfeeding Infant:In these two areas,84.1% of infants age below 6 month-old was exclusive breastfeeding and 8.9% was fed up milk in the four hour after birth. At the age of 5 month-old, they began to add up complementary foods, and at the age of 10 month-old was the weaning time. On the other hand, the main factors which might affect on breastfeeding were the small amount of breast milk (54%) and working reason (52.3%).3. Nutritional Knowledge of Caretakers:The caretakers had grasped up with the source of Vitamin A, and 59.2% of them knew the sources of Vitamin A from animal livers, vegetables, and fruits. In addition,53.3% caretakers knew the iron-rich food from animal blood,29% of them knew the best sources of calcium from breast milk and milk products, and only 17.9% of them had clearly understood the exposure to sun light is to obtain Vitamin D. Besides,65.2% of caretakers knew the deficiency of zinc is the lack of one kind micronutrient, and 80% of them were unclear about the rickets and nyctalopia. Furthermore,83.3% of caretakers thought that diet is very important for healthy growth and development, and 96.5% of them believed that for ablactating infants should keep providing other additional milk in order to promote growth. What’s more,85.1% of the caretakers used a variety of methods (such as changing the cooking method) to persuade their children eat more, and 59.1% people often changed the food type. Additionally,85.7% of caretakers wanted to learn more about feeding and nutritional knowledge for children, also 29% of feeding knowledge had been obtaining from doctors. Most mothers had lack knowledge of the main nutrition food sources, but the feeding attitude for baby was generally good.Conclusions:1. The breastfeeding of 6 month-old-infants has already been reaching 《Outline for the Development of Chinese Children 2011~2020》 the requirements "0~6 month-old-infants’ breastfeeding was over 50%" in poor areas of minority groups in Yunnan Province, the age of 10 month-old was the weaning time.but the sustained breastfeeding to two years old was low.2. Lacking knowledge of caretakers about the deficiency in feeding, need to be enhancing the scientific feeding knowledge, in order to improve the level of nutritional awareness, and thereby better infant feeding condition.
