Background We conducted a meta-analysis aimed at evaluating the diagnostic ability of macular ganglion cell complex (mGCC) thickness to detect suspected glaucoma(SG), preperimetric glaucoma (PPG) and early glaucoma (EG) by optical coherence tomography (OCT).Methods We searched the Pubmed, EMbase, CNKI and Wanfang databases with for the period up to 24th March 2016 to measure SG, PPG or EG and mGCC. Data were assessed by Review Manager 5.3 and MetaDiSc.Results This meta-analysis consisted 761 SG and 388 healthy eyes,750 PPG and 887 healthy eyes,975 EG and 1156 healthy eyes. The result supported that all mGCC parameters (average, superior, inferior, percentage of focal loss volume (FLV%) and global loss volume (GLV%) were significantly different between SG, PPG and EG with the healthy eyes (p< 0.05). The key founding was that the increasing rates of FLV% and GLV% were higher for detect EG and PPG (increasing rates of FLV% and GLV% were 228.94%and 130.41%in PPG,351.13% and 183.37% in EG, respectively). Conclusion The current meta-analysis demonstrated that mGCC thickness measured by OCT might provide an important structural diagnostic indicator for SG, PPG and EG.
