Background:Mental retardation (MR) is a set of mental hypoplasia or blocked syndrome that characterized by low intelligence and social adaptation difficulties which onset prior to maturity (before the age of 18). Children with MR occupy a large proportion in the neurological in-patients, the presence of these children bring huge stress and enormous burden to society and families. In the medical field, too much attention were putted on the athletic ability and cognitive development of children, but the importance of the psychological and social adaptation ability to social and children’s life were ignored, besides, there were no effective pertinent intervention. At present, treatment abroad is given priority to special education, music, speech therapy and sensory integration therapy, in the domestic, the traditional characteristic therapies such as acupuncture, point injection, massage, traditional music (such as five elements, Buddhist scriptures) therapy were increased on the basis of the above, witch with the curative effect. Auditory integration training is mainly used for autistic children’s behavior problems with curative effect, but whether the treatment can be applied to children with mental retardation. The work which show that there is or not a certain meaning of the method to the psychological behavior and cognitive improvement of children with mental retardation is still blank in the domestic and international research fields, a large number of relevant studies are needed to explore the potential and expand its clinical application of this therapy. Objective:The objective of this comparison research between children with MR and normal children in same age through clinical randomized controlled trials was to understand the differences on psychological behavior between children with MR and normal children, observe whether auditory integration training could improve psychological behavior problems and cognitive ability of children with MR, then to improve the therapeutic effect on psychological behavior problems and cognitive ability of children with MR, in order to make these patients better adapt to the society and have a happy life. Methods:Through randomized controlled method,60 cases of 2 to 6 years old with MR in hospital and clinic in The affiliated Nanhai maternity and children’s Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine were selected and then divided into A, B groups with each 30 cases,30 cases of normal age were selected as blank control group C. Modern rehabilitation therapy was carries on both A and B group, on the basis, auditory integration training was attached to group A, group B only with comprehensive rehabilitation therapy(acupuncture and moxibustion, massage, homework therapy, language training, early education, music education therapy), group C with no intervention. Comprehensive rehabilitation therapy was according to the conventional treatment, a small treatment with 20 days,15 to 20 days interval between each course, for auditory integration training, a small treatment with 20 day, half a year interval between each course. After two small procedures, to evaluate the behavior and cognitive development of children with Beijing’s development scale (Gesell), Achenbach child behavior scale (CBCL), baby-junior high school students’ ability in social life scale (SM). SPSS19.0 was used for data analysis. Results:In the end,70 cases were into the statistic,23 cases in group A, 22 cases in group B,25 cases in group C;1. Before the research, baseline data of two groups such as gender, age, parents’ level of education, score of five area in Gesell scale, score of each factor in CBCL scale was compared, the differences between two groups had no statistical significance (P> 0.05), suggesting two comparable.2. Before the treatment, each factor score of CBCL scale between children with MR and normal children in same age, the difference was statistically significant (P< 0.05).3. After treatment, social adaptation DQ, language DQ and personal social DQ of Gesell scale in two groups showed statistically significant (P < 0.05); the big movement DQ, fine motor DQ had no statistical significance (P> 0.05);Social withdrawal factor, depression factor, attack factor, immature factor score of CBCL scale in the two groups before and after treatment ware statistically significant (P< 0.05), schizophreniform factor score showed no statistical significance (P> 0.05), social withdrawal score, depression score, attack score, naive score in group A improve more than that of group B.4. Difference of five area DQ in Gesell scale before and after treatment in group A had statistical significance (P< 0.05), of which the social adaptation ability and the personal social improve the most obvious; Social withdrawal factor, depression factor, factor, childish immature factor in CBCL scale obviously improved compared with before, there were statistical differences (P< 0.05), although it showed no statistical significance in terms of schizophreniform factor (P> 0.05), but there was a decrease in the total score, so there was a slight improvement; Five area DQ of Gesell scale were improved Group B after the treatment, the difference was statistically significant (P< 0.05);depression factor of CBCL scale was statistically significant (P< 0.05), the other factor showed no statistical significance (P> 0.05) compared with before.5. Each factor of CBCL scale in different gender, age of Group A did not show statistical significance (P> 0.05); In each factor score of the CBCL scale of different level of MR children before and after treatment, the attack factor score was statistically significant (P< 0.05), the remaining four score showed no statistical significance (P> 0.05).Conclusion:Auditory integration training can significantly improve emotional and behavioral problems of children with MR, combining traditional Chinese and western medicine treatment has significant effects on intelligence on children with MR:(1) Auditory integration training can improve bad mood and behavior of MR children such as back, depression, attack, naive;(2)The language, social adaptation and individual social skills of children with MR has significantly increased after auditory integration training; (3) In the Chinese and western medicine combined therapy, certain treatment may increase the children’s bad behavior, such as split sample behavior; (4) The CBCL score in different age and gender of children showed obvious difference, these may be associated with the study sample size scarce, large sample research still needed to further argument in the future.
