Objective This study is based on clinical research to observe the curative effect and safety of the treatment which combines Anchou Granules and tiapride to treat Tourette syndrome, so that we can explore a safe and effective new-method to treat such disease. Methods 264 children diagnosed with Tourette syndrome were randomly divided into group A.. group B and group C. Three groups were administered with same basic health edudation and psychotherapy. While group A was treated with tiapride orally; group B was treated with Anchou Granules orally; group C was treated with tiapride and Anchou Granules orally together. The composition of Anchou Granules:gouteng 12g,tianma 9g,jiangcan 9g,quanxie 4g,shengmuli 30g,fabanxia 9g,fuling 15g,chenpi 6g,baishao 15g,zhigancao 5g and so on. The concrete dosage depended on the children’s body weight:full dose for over 30kg,2/3 dose for within 20-30kg, half dose for under 20kg. Medication instruction:dissolve the granules into 50-150ml boiled water, then take the solution twice a day. Medication instruction of tiapride: (1)body weight<25kg:take 100mg per day as initial dose, thrice per day after meal, (2) body weight>25kg:take 150mg per day as initial dose, three times a day after meal. Then weekly increase the dose for 50mg per day until the symptoms will have been generally controlled. We took 12 weeks as one therapy session. Before and after the session, we used Yale global tic severity scale (YGTSS) to evaluate the efficacy. We also used the treatment emergent symptom scale (TESS) to evaluate the adverse reaction of the two drugs in the 4th,8th and 12th week. Results The YGTSS score of the three groups after the treatment were significantly lower (P<0.01). The variance analysis of the YGTSS score after treatment revealed that:the difference of the treatment between group A and group B showed no statistical significance (P>0.05);the difference of the treatment between group A and group C was statistically significant (P<0.01); the difference of the treatment between group B and group C was statistically significant (P<0.05). The variance analysis of the TESS score after treatment revealed that:the difference of the treatment between group A and group B was statistically significant (P<0.01);the difference of the treatment between A and group C was statistically significant (P<0.01); the difference of the treatment between group B and group C showed no statistical significance (P>0.05).Conclusions The therapy which combined Anchou Granules and tiapride was more effective and had less side effect than just using any one of them respectively in treating Tourette syndrome.
