Objective1. To understand the epidemic status of hypertension, the cognition of its related knowledge and behavior and the situation of its awareness, treatment, control in a city of Suzhou, in order to analyze associated risk factors and identify high-risk people.2. To take comprehensive intervention measures and evaluate these measures by comparing the cognition of hypertension related knowledge and behavior and the situation of its awareness, treatment, control before and after the intervention and improve the three rates of hypertension by raising the awareness of hypertension related knowledge, thus effectively prevent and control high blood pressure.3. To provide scientific evidence for prevention and control of hypertension through this study and then work out a set of hypertension prevention and treatment programs for local residents.Materials and MethodsWe adopted a cluster sampling method to select three communities in Suzhou City and investigated baseline information of residents in the form of a questionnaire survey. At the same time, we took routine physical examination on the subjects. Community interventions, which were mainly based on health education, were carried out in all the three communities. We sampled 455 people to evaluate intervention measures by means of questionnaire.Results1. The hypertension prevalence rate is higher in the communities of Suzhou City(standardized prevalence rate of 36.11%). The main risk factors of hypertension were age, male gender, family history of hypertension, increased body mass index, waist-hip ratio, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides and blood uric acid; whereas the protective factor was high degree of education. Residents in these communities were lack of hypertension related knowledge, but were of full awareness of its severity. The development rate ofhealth behavior about smoking and drinking was higher, however, the rate regarding low salt and low fat diet and physical activities was low. The awareness, treatment and control rates of hypertension in patients were lower and main relevant factors were age, sex and occupation.2. We randomly selected and followed up 455 residents from 2131 community residents who participated in the early baseline survey of the project. There was no significantly different of prevalence of hypertension between pre-intervention and post-intervention among the participants(P>0.05). But diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly(P<0.01) while systolic blood pressure had no significant changes compared with pre-intervention(P>0.05).The rate of awareness of hypertension was improved after intervention. And it was significant difference compared with pre-intervention. But there was no significantly different of residents’ attitude towards hypertension between pre-intervention and post-intervention(P>0.05). The formation rates of non-smoking, non-drinking and physical exercises had improved significantly after intervention in the investigation of five health behavior formation(all P <0.01).The rates of awareness, treatment and control of hypertension were 64.27%, 58.29%and 20.78% among patients with hypertension before intervention. After intervention, the rates of awareness, treatment and control of hypertension increased significantly compared with pre-intervention(all P<0.01).3. The interventions failed to significantly change the prevalence of hypertension and blood pressure levels in residents, but it was able to, to some extent, increase residents’ knowledge in relation to prevention and control and then raised the three rates of hypertension.ConclusionThe hypertension prevalence rate was higher in the communities of Suzhou City and hypertension has become an important public health problem. The comprehensive intervention measures adopted in this study, with the aims to reduce major risk factors of hypertension and to raise its awareness, treatment and control rates, were effective.
