Objective: To evaluate the effects of training course for general practitioners who work in the towns or villages to prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases on awareness, treatment and control rate of hypertension in local residents and explore effective ways to improve the level of prevention and treatment of hypertension in rural area of Xinjiang. Methods: As intervention group, we selected 2 counties of pastoral areas in Xinjiang randomly and general practitioners from the 2 counties accepted three years of regularly training course of prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. 3 years later, another 2 counties(districts) without training program for general practitioners who work in the towns or villages were selected randomly as the non-intervention group. Epidemiological research was conducted to compare awareness, treatment and control rate of hypertension and related risk factors between two groups. Results: Morbidity rates of hypertension was 36.95% in the intervention group and 37.22% in the non-intervention group, there’s no significant differences between them(P>0.05). Awareness, treatment and control rate of hypertension(48.53% vs 31.14%, 30.74% vs 26.54%and 15.95% vs 9.25 % respectively, P<0.01)were significantly higher in intervention group than non-intervention group. Awareness, treatment and control rate of hypertension were also affected by some other risk factors, such as gender and age. Conclusion: Professional training of prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease to general practitioners who worked in the towns or villages improved awareness, treatment and control rate of hypertension. That might be an effective way to prevent cardiovascular disease in rural area of Xinjiang. Moreover, gender and age had effects on them, which need to be considered in order to improve prevention of cardiovascular diseases in Xinjiang.
