BackgroundHypothyroidism is one of the common seen complications after treatment of laryngeal carcinoma, especially with those patients who underwent surgery combined with radiotherapy. As reported incidence of hypothyroidism varies according to treatment modalities in different regions,it is easily underestimated in clinical work, while its development takes affects on the quality of life experience among the patients.ObjectiveTo evaluate the incidence of hypothyroidism after treatment of laryngeal carcinoma. And to assess the risk factors of developing hypothyroidism with patients who underwent treatment modalities for laryngeal carcinoma.MethodsWe searched pubmeddatabased、Web of knowledge、EMBASE、Wiley Journal website from the inception to April 5 2015 for studies which assessed the incidence of hypothyroidism after treatment of laryngeal carcinoma and the relationship between treatment modalities and the incidence.Quality of the selected studies was assessed using a modification of a recently employed system designed with reference to Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE), Quality Assessment Tool for Systematic Reviews of Observational Studies (QATSO), and Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE). All statistical analyses were performed with STATA version 12.0.Summary estimates were derived using a random-effects model.ConclusionResults suggest that the overall incidence of hypothyroidism among patients after treatment of laryngeal carcinoma is 54% (95%CI:45%~ 64%)。And meta-analysis show there is a promotion effect of neck dissection and hemithyroidectomy to the development of hypothyroidism after the treatment.
