Objective To estimate the efficacy of liver transplantation for patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Methods In terms of key word "cholangiocarcinoma" or "bile duct cancer" or "cholangiocellular carcinoma" and "liver transplantation", literature search was simultaneously performed in PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Science Direct up to March 2015, and restricted to the articles published in English language. Altogether 7 clinical trials containing 211 transplanted patients of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma were enrolled in this study. Results The overall 1-,3-,5-year pooled survival rates were 0.745( 95% confidence interval(CI)=0.673-0.818),0.505(95%CI=0.422-0.587),0. 361(95%CI=0.271-0.450) respectively. Tumor-free survival rates at 1-,3-, 5-year were 0.629 (95%CI=0.517-0.741),0.385 (95%CI=0.273-0.497 ),0.227 (95%CI=0.102-0.351), respectively. Conclusions Even if the 5-year survival rate for the patients with intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma after liver transplantation is not optimistic for the existing data shows, the patients who strictly selected in the early tumor stage and got neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy before surgery may have better prognosis.
