Objective: To explore the characteristics of the cognitive impairment after cerebral infarction in basal ganglia area and to guide the clinical treatment and rehabilitation of cognitive function.Methods: The cognitive functions of 86 patients in the department of neurology, the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University who suffered from unilateral basal ganglia infarction with first episodes between January 2012 and December 2013 were examed by the Chinese version of Motreal Congnitive Assessment(Mo CA). These patients included 42 cases of left and 44 cases of right basal ganglia infarction. The cognitive functions of 92 elderly people from the community were test as contrl group. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS 17.0 software, including Chi-square test and Student’s t test. The significance level was considered P<0.05.Results: 50 of 86 cases in patients group had Mo CA less than 26. The scores of language,visuospatial/executive, attention, memory and abstraction were significantly lower than those in control group(P<0.01). There were no difference in the scores of naming and orientation(P>0.05). The scores of language, visuospatial/executive, memory and in patients with left basal ganglia infarction were significantly lower than those in patients with right side lesion(P<0.05). There were no difference in the scores of naming, attention, abstraction,orientation(P>0.05). Basal ganglia infarction volume correlated cognitive function compared with basal ganglia infarct volume and language discovery, execution, memory negative correlation(rs<0, P<0.05), the larger the infarct volume, the more obvious cognitive impairment.Conclucion: Cognitive function impairment is common in patients with basal ganglia infarction, and in language skills, visuospatial/executive, attention, memory and abstraction ability are its main manifestation.Left and right side of the basal ganglia in language ability,executive function, memory and other cognitive domain plays a different role respectively, inthe incidence of disease damage on the left side than on the right side, left over right on the degree of pathological damage. Ipsilateral different volume of basal ganglia infarction associated with cognitive impairment, the infarction volume, the greater the cognitive impairment.
