Objective: To investigate the risk factors for the recurrence of T3 rectal cancer after radical resection. Methods: The clinical data of 7 locally recurrent rectal cancer patients(recurrent group)and 25 patients without recurrence(control group)who received radical resection at the same clinic group of Fujian Provincial Cancer Hospital from January 2009 to June 2013 were retrospectively analyzed. We define the early postoperative recurrence is diagnosed with a recurrence through endoscopy, imaging or surgery again within 18 month after radical resection. Factors including sex, over 65 years of age, nutrition, existence of heart and lung diseases, preoperative level of CEA, tumor location, whether for laparoscopic surgery, tumor differentiation, vascular or neural invasion, tumor diameter, number of lymph nodes dissected and number of positive lymph nodes, postoperative radiotherapy or chemotherapy were analysed by univariate analysis, and factors correlated with tumor recurrence were screened out.All data were analyzed using the chisquare test, t test,Wilcoxon test or Logistic regression analysis. Results: All the patients were followed up till January 2015.7 patients in the recurrent group and 25 patients in the control group. The results of univariate analysis showed that there were significant differences in tumor location and preoperative level of CEA between the 2 groups(c2=4.937, 8.312,P<0.05).There were no significant differences in sex, over 65 years of age, nutrition, existence of heart and lung diseases, whether for laparoscopic surgery, tumor differentiation, vascular or neural invasion, tumor diameter, number of lymph nodes dissected and number of positive lymph nodes, postoperative radiotherapy or chemotherapy between the 2 groups(c2= 1.603,1.524, 1.200,5.040,1.524,3.886,3.418,T=1.1218,1.795,1.897,0.029,P>0.05).The results of multivariate analysis showed that preoperative CEA level >5 ng/m L were the factors correlated with the recurrence of T3 rectal cancer after radical resection(Wald=5.547,P<0.05). Further analysis results shows that: early recurrence of T3 rectal cancer after radical operation operation is correlated with 1ower rectal cancer; and preoperative CEA level >5 ng/m L is independent factor for recurrence. Conclusion: Locally recurrent rectal cancer is closely related to tumor Iocation and preoperative CEA level.which indicates that these data are of great importance in assessing the prognosis and making subsequent treatment schedule.
