ObjectiveTo develop a scientific, practical triage system and it was applied to triage patients in pediatric emergency, then, to investigate its clinical effects.MethodsFinished reviewing and translation the five level triage system of the CTAS(The Canadian triage and acuity scale), the key indicators in were screened out and was conducted by the requirement of the professional field. We developed a pediatric emergency triage system. All patients were divided into two groups. The trial group collected the patients who visited pediatric emergency room from January 2014 to June 2014. They were triaged by the pediatric emergency triage system. The control group collected the patients who visited pediatric emergency room from January 2013 to June 2013. They were triaged empirically by the triage nurses. The clinical effects of the triage system was evaluated through comparing the emergency patients flows, triage rate and the accurate of the triage rate, length of waiting especially the length of waiting of severe patients, and the satisfaction of their families between the two groups.Results①The content validity coefficient of paper version triage criteria was 0.91; ②The emergency patients flows of the trial group were declined.(Cox-Staurt test,T=0,P<0.05). ③The triage rate(93.40%) of the trial group was higher that(90.75%) of the control group(2c =801.546,P<0.001). ④The accurate of the triage rate(96.32%) in the trial group was higher that(85.09%) of the control group(2c=710.904,P<0.001).⑤ Compared length of waiting to the control group [(41.6 ± 15.4) min], [(37.3 ± 13.8)min] of the trial group became shorter.(t=11.27,P<0.05);the length of waiting of severe patients in the trial group [(159.75±146.17)s] was obvious shorter than the control group [(303.26±591.04)s](t=-3.602, P <0.001).⑥The family satisfaction rate ofthe trial group was 94.23%, and it had clearly risen than the control(92.21%)(2c =321.528,P<0.001).ConclusionsUsing the five level pediatric emergency triage system can quickly, accurately identify severe patients in pediatric emergency, improve the success rate of rescue by the quickly and effective treatment. The system can well shunt down the non-urgent patients into out-patient department, The pediatric emergency triage system can standardize the pediatric triage work in emergency room, optimize emergency care procedure, and improve the nursing quality and efficiency.
