Objective:To research the prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis(CAS) from 65 patients with chronic renal failure undergoing maintenance hemodialysis(MHD), and the associations between CAS and intima-media thickness(IMT), micro-inflammatory state, lipid metabolism disorder, arm ankle index(ABI), and red blood cell volume distribution width(RDW), and correspondingly underlining mechanisms. Methods:Data of patients with chronic renal failure undergoing MHD was collected between January 2012 and January 2014, and all of the patients went through MHD with duration of three months or above. The diagnosis of CAS was carried out by echocardiography, and other correlated examinations included clinical observation, laboratory examination, and examinations of cardiac structure and function. Several statistical methods were employed such as student’s t test and logistic regression analysis to compare between the groups and explore the correlation factors, respectively. Results:The prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis was 63.1%(41/65)。 There were significant differences of age, IMT, albumin, systolic pressure, pulse pressure, C-reactive protein(CRP), hemoglobin blood calcium, blood phosphate, high-density lipoprotein, and ABI between the CAS and non-CAS groups(P < 0.05), besides the rest of testing indexes(P > 0.05). CRP level, age, and IMT of patients were risk factors of CAS according to logistic regression analysis. Compared with patients with increasing IMT, the RDW and CRP levels of those with normal IMT were significant higher(P < 0.05). The age, RDW, and hypertension history besides others were risk factors of increasing IMT from logistic regression analysis.Conclusions:1.CAS is one of severe complications of patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis.2.The higher CRP level, increasing IMT and older age are risk factors of CAS.3.The abnormal RDW level, hypertension history, and older age are rick factors of increasing IMT.4.It is necessary to establish individualized treatment plan according to the actual situation because of complexity of patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis combined with CAS.
