Gardenia jasminoides var. radicans(Thunb.) Makino is an evergreen shrub of the genus Gardenia(Ellis)(Rubiaceae). It is widely distributed and artificially cultivated in southern China, and mainly produced in Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Zhejiang, Fujian,Sichuan provinces. The medicinal parts of this plant, including roots, leaves, and fruits, are used as folk remedies for the treatment of heats, pains, and breeze-humidification. It is also a good raw material for the extraction of natural yellow pigments, which is widely used for virescence, ornamental and medicine with high economic value. To date, the studies[1-5] on its chemical constituents were more deficient than that of Gardenia jasminoides. In order to better explore its phytochemical characteristics and to offer better research foundation for its application, we have been trying to systemically investigate the chemical constituents of its fruits. 30 compounds were obtained from this plant with different chromatographic methods, and their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic characteristics and identified as 2-methyl-6-oxo-2,4-heptadienoic acid O-β-D-gentiobioside(SZZ-1), jasminoside O(SZZ-2),jasminoside M(SZZ-3), jasminoside V(SZZ-4), rehmapicrogenin(SZZ-5), 6’-Otrans-sinapoyljasminoside A(SZZ-6), jasminoside B(SZZ-7), crocetin(SZZ-8),crocin-3(SZZ-9), geniposide(SZZ-10), 6β-deacetyl asperulosidic acid methyl ester(SZZ-11), 6β-methoxy scandoside methyl ester(SZZ-12), 10-O-E-pcoumaroylgeniposidic acid(SZZ-13), 6’’-O-trans-cinnamoylgenipin gentiobioside(SZZ-14), 2’-O-trans-caffeoylgardoside(SZZ-15), cyclopentanepyrone A(SZZ-16),gardeterpenone A(SZZ-17), umuhengerin(SZZ-18), wogonin(SZZ-19), kaempferol3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(SZZ-20), quercetin-3-O-[2-O-trans-caffeoyl-α-Lrhamnopyranosyl-(1â†'6)-β-D-glucopyranoside] SZZ-(21), quercetin-3-O-[2-O-transcaffeoyl-β-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1â†'6)-β-D-glucopyranoside](SZZ-22), 3,5-dimethoxy-4-hydroxy-benzaldehyde(SZZ-23), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural(SZZ-24),(5R,2E)-5-hydroxy-2-methyl-hepta-2-ene-1,6-dione(SZZ-25), 1-O-trans-pcoumaroyl-β-D-glucopyranose(SZZ-26), dibutylphthalate(SZZ-27), 6,7-dimethoxy-4-hydroxy-1-naphthoic acid(SZZ-28), pinoresinol(SZZ-29), syringaresinol(SZZ-30). Among all the isolated compounds, SZZ-4, SZZ-16, SZZ-17, SZZ-21 and SZZ-22 are new compounds. Except for compounds SZZ-8~SZZ-12, SZZ-15, all of other compounds are isolated from this plant for the first time.
