Artemisia argyi has a long history of medicinal use in traditional Chinese medicine. The ancients hang it in front of the door to drive away insects. As the development of modern pharmacology, it has been found with various pharmacological activities including antibacterial, antifungal and antitumor activity, tranquilizing and relieving asthma. In this paper, the main effective components of Ariemisa argyi were comprehensively extracted and the biological activities were investigated, using Qiai A. argyi produced in Hubei province.(1) By steam distillation, the essential oils were derived from the folium Artemisia argyi which were respectively grown in Hubei and Hunan province, and chemical composition of the essential oil was analyzed by GC-MS. Results showed that the content of Qiai oil was 25% higher than that of Hunan oil. The toal content of the five main functional components of Artemisia oil, cineole, caryophyllene oxide, beta-caryophyllene, thujone and camphor, was 40.61% in Qiai oil while only 27.248% in Hunan oil. By comparation comprehensively, Qiai has a better efficacy.(2) Ariemisa argyi Levi. et vant.cv.qiai was used as raw materials. Comprehensive extractions of essential oils, polysaccharides and flavones from Ariemisa argyi were designed, and the best extraction conditions were respectively optimized by orthogonal design. The optimum extraction processes were determined as follows:for essential oils, material/liquid ratio 1:20, soaking time 3h, extraction time 6h; for total polysaccharides, material/liquid ratio 1:10, soaking time 5h, extraction time 3h; for total flavonoids, material/liquid ratio 1:5, soaking time 8h, extraction time 3h.(3) Ariemisa argyi was pulverized and passed through 60-mesh sieve. By adding certain quantity of pectinase and NaCl, the hydrodistillation yields of essential oils were furtherly improved. Results showed that the amount of extracted essential oils was 22.7% higher than that of those untreated. Meanwhile the content of polysaccharide and flavonoids in the water extract increased significantly.(4) The scavenging capability of hydroxyl free radicals (OH·), DPPH free radicals and ABTS free radicals were investigated using Vc as the reference. The results showed that essential oil, polysaccharides and flavones from Artemisia argyi have strong antioxidant activity, which can be used in the development of natural antioxidants. Further researches showed that essential oils have strong antimicrobial activity, while water extract ability is poor. The inclusion processes were optimized with the ratio of essential oil to P-CD, embedding temperature and embedding time, and the encapsulation efficiency of essential oil was up to 82.36%, thereby improving the stability and applicability of essential oil.
