Objective:Diagnosis and Treatment of Hot and Humid Bi (arthralgia) Syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine.Methods:This paper aims to study the aetiology, pathogenesis, key symptoms, treatment rationale, prescription methods, and all related research, in order to explore the treatment methods and principles of the Hot and Humid Bi (arthralgia) Syndrome.Results:Hot and Humid Bi (arthralgia) Syndrome is one of the Bi (arthralgia) syndromes unique to Traditional Chinese Medicine and is caused by the gathering of damp, combined with heat, causing steam to be accumulated in the meridians and qi to be blocked. It is also seen in modern Western medicine diagnoses such as rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and other inflammatory diseases, or during the development period of certain diseases. It covers a wide range of clinical manifestations including joint and limb pain, joint swelling, fever and chills, profuse sweating, facial chlorosis, dry mouth without thirst, thick yellow tongue coating, red tongue, and slow or slippery pulse. Deficiency of vital qi and the presence of external factors such as wind, cold, damp and heat are the two main triggering factors of the Hot and Humid Bi (arthralgia) Syndrome, and at the same time, are also the basis of pathological changes of the Hot and Humid Bi (arthralgia) Syndrome. To diagnose Hot and Humid Bi (arthralgia) Syndrome, one should differentiate between the syndromes of excess damp heat and imbalance of difference energies; and the different types of syndromes, as well as explain the pathogenesis. Treatment principles and methods should be based on removing damp and heat and increasing vital qi, and focused on differentiating the different syndromes, in combination appropriate adjuvant external Traditional Chinese treatment to achieve the most effective treatment outcome. The characteristics of prescription method are to remove heat and damp, get rid of Evils, nourish and circulate blood. remove clots and unblock meridians. the use of both vines and insects, nourish the kidneys and clear numbness. Commonly used prescriptions include not only the ancient presciptions passed down from long ago, such as Bai Hu Gui Zhi Tang, Xuan Bi Tang etc, but also combined prescriptions by modern physicians and tried-and-tested formulas by patients suffering from the Hot and Humid Bi (arthralgia) Syndrome, which often include heat clearing medicine, damp removing medicine, blood tonifying and circulating medicines and so on.
