Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety andeffectiveness of balloon sinuplasty.Methods:15patients (41sinuses) were offered treatment witha new technique of balloon sinuplasty and followed for3to6months after surgery in our department from June2014to December2014, including "balloon-only" patients and "hybrid" patients.Effectiveness was determined by endoscopic examination and computedtomographic (CT) scan. The effect of the operation were observed by theLund-MacKay CT scores, and the patient’s subjective symptoms wereunderstood by the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-20(SNOT-20) to evaluatepostoperative condition.Result:15patients (41sinuses) were followed after surgery,including9"balloon-only" patients and6"hybrid" patients. Nounanticipated adverse effects were noted in any patients. Endoscopicexamination showed the sinus ostium was good, and computedtomographic (CT) scan showed the lesions apparently disappeared.Lund-Mackay CT scores showed that all patients postoperative scoreswere significantly improved from baseline at3months and6months(0.47vs9.13,P<0.01;0.67vs9.80,P<0.01),"balloon-only"patientspostoperative scores were significantly improved from baseline at3 months and6months(0.67vs8.89,P<0.01;1.00vs10.00,P<0.01),and"hybrid" patients postoperative scores were significantly improved frombaseline at3months and6months(0.38vs9.48,P<0.01;0.46vs9.48,P<0.01).Sino-nasaloutcometest-20(SNOT-20)showedthatallpatientspostoperative scores were significantly improved from baseline at3months and6months (0.22vs1.05,P<0.01;0.28vs0.98, P<0.01),"balloon-only" patients postoperative scores were significantly improvedfrom baseline at3months and6months(0.18vs1.08,P<0.01;0.28vs1.05,P<0.01),and "hybrid" patients postoperative scores weresignificantly improved from baseline at3months and6months(0.28vs1.00,P<0.01;0.28vs0.90,P<0.01). Nosignificantdifferencebetween the "balloon-only" patients and "hybrid" patients, operationcurative effect is very obvious, and subjective symptoms improvedsignificantly. Conclusion: Balloon sinuplasty can not only open nasal sinuseffectively, while also preserve normal tissue structure and mucousmembrane of nasal cavity and nasal sinus. Balloon sinuplasty appears tobe a safe, effective and minimally invasive treatment option to relievesinus ostial obstruction. Patients who receive balloon catheter sinusotomyin endoscopic sinus surgery have significant improvement after surgery.Balloon sinuplasty can also be combined with the endoscopic sinussurgery to achieve a better therapeutic effect. It is worth of clinical promotion and application.
