AIM: To explore the effects of vitreoretinal surgery in diabetics and non-diabetic patients on cornealendothelial cell density and morphology.METHODS: Collected in the experimental group (diabetes) and control group (non-diabetic group) of60patients each, of which30cases of diabetic group and30cases in the control group underwent vitrectomycombined with silicone oil tamponade surgery,30cases of diabetic patients and30control patients(lenticular vitreoretinal combined with silicone oil tamponade surgery). To detect the corneal endothelialcell density(CD), coefficient of variation of endothelial cell area (CV), percentage of hexagonal cells(RHC)of two groups of patients1day before surgery and three months after surgery. The differences of twogroups were compared before and after surgery in corneal endothelial cell changes.RESULTS: After vitrectomy combined with silicone oil surgery, there were significant differences on thecoefficient of variation of corneal endothelial cells and the percentage of hexagonal cells between thediabetic and control groups. There were no significant differences on the density of corneal endothelialcells and the different values before after surgery between the diabetic and control groups. In the diabeticand control groups, obvious differences were also found in corneal endothelial cell density, coefficient ofvariation and the percentage of hexagonal cells after lenticular vitreoretinal combined with silicone oiltamponade surgery. The different values for groups of diabetic and non-diabetic all were statisticallysignificant in corneal endothelial cell dens ity, coefficient of variation and the percentage of hexagonal c ellsbefore and after surgery.CONCLUSIONS: The effects of vitrectomy combined with silicone oil tamponade surgery on corneaendothelial cell were mainly reflected on changes of corneal topography. Compared with the non-diabeticgroup, the changes in corneal endothelial cell shape and destiny of diabetic patients underwent lenticularvitrectomy with silicone oil tamponade surgery are more evidently. Therefore, the strict examination ofpreoperative corneal endothelial cell has important significant for diabetic patients postoperative visualrecovery.
