ObjectiveThe purpose of this study is to assess the Panjin City residents’ health literacylevel, the present situation and distribution about residents’ basic knowledge andconcepts of health, healthy lifestyle and behavior, basic skills,then to explore therelative factors of the public health. To provide the basis for the local government totake intervention measures next and formulate directional measures about healthpolicy-making, health promotion and health education. Further to establish andperfect the system of health literacy assessment, comprehensively improve the healthliteracy level of the residents and improve the quality of life.MethodsUsing the method of questionnaire survey to a total of2008subjects wereinvestigated by mult-steps cluster random sampling. This questionnaire wasformulated on the basis of Chinese residents health literacy questionnaire and dividedinto the basic situation of residents and health literacy content two parts, part of healthliteracy content mainly include basic knowledge and concepts, healthy lifestyle andbehavior, basic skills. The survey data was used SPSS18.0software to analyse theawareness rate of three health literacy aspects and five kinds of health problems anddescribe the residents health literacy level synthetically. Chi-Square Test was used tocompared residents health literacy level in different demographic characteristics.ResultsThe overall level of health literacy of residents in Panjin city was11.35%. Therate of basic knowledge and concepts, healthy lifestyle and behavior, basic skills was18.43%,14.19%,40.29%,respectively.The scientific views of health literacy, infectiousdiseases prevention literacy, chronic disease prevention literacy, safety and emergencyliteracy, as well as basic medical health literacy was41.88%,23.66%,9.01%,38.99%,7.67%,respectively. From the survey results can be seen, influencing factors of health literacy level ofthe residents were area, gender, age, education level. Among them, the city residents’health literacy rate and other categories of literacy rate was higher than that of ruralresidents’; the lower age group’s and higher age group’s health literacy level is low;the higher level of education, health literacy level of the residents is high.In order to improve the level of health literacy of residents in Panjin city, thegovernment should continue to value the residents’ health literacy, carry out targetedhealth education for different groups of people, expand ways to acquire healthknowledge, explore various forms of health education, strengthen the prevention andcontrol of chronic disease, and conduct monitoring and evaluation of health literacyregularly.Conclusion1. The overall level of health literacy of residents in Panjin city in2012was11.35%.2. Panjin city residents’ three literacy rate from high to low was: basic skills40.29%, basic knowledge and concept18.43%, healthy lifestyle and behavior14.19%.In the future, we should primarily improve the healthy lifestyle and behavior literacyin the health education and health promotion work.3. Panjin city residents’ five kinds of health problems literacy rate from high tolow was: scientific view of health literacy41.88%, safety and emergency literacy38.99%,infectious diseases prevention literacy23.66%,chronic diseases preventionliteracy9.01%, basic medical literacy7.67%.4. Influencing factors of health literacy of residents in Panjin city were area,gender, age, education level.5. The city residents’ health literacy level and other categories of literacy levelwas higher than that of rural residents’.6. The students’ basic skills literacy level was the highest, healthy lifestyle andbehavior was the second, basic knowledge and concepts was the lowest.
