The Clinical Efficacy Of Using AO Suture Anchors And Modified Bosworth Technique To Repair The Chronic Rupture Of Achilles Tendon

Objective: The study aims to evaluate the clinical efficacy of using AO sutureanchors and modified Bosworth technique to repair the chronic rupture of achilles tendon.Methods: Between March2012and March2014, AO suture anchors, modifiedBosworth technique and huo xue zhi tong san were done for chronic rupture of achillestendon. Patients included17males and3females. Their mean age at the time of theoperation was37.15years (range:24to65years). Standard AP views were takenimmediately after surgery and at routine follow-up2，6and12months following surgery.We evaluated the time to union and radiologic complications (e.g., AVN, screw penetration,tuberosity malunion or nonunion and varus collapse) of the fracture. Functional outcomewas evaluated according to Kaikkonen’s scores and Arner-Lindholm’s criteria, whichconsists of pain, function, range in motion and anatomy. Patients’ subjective rating of theoutcome was recorded:‘excellent’,‘good’,‘fair’ and ‘poor’. Other clinical complicationswere also reviewed.Results: There was no rupture of achilles tendon once more and union was achievedin all cases. Patients functional outcomes of using Arner-Lindholm’s criteria was‘excellent’ in11and ‘good’ in8. There were no complications at the operated siteincluding infection, rupture and nerve injury；Kaikkonen’s scores were evaluated in allpatients and showed good or excellent result in all patients:90.00%(range:80–100)Conclusion: The results of using AO suture anchors, modified Bosworth techniqueand huo xue zhi tong san for chronic rupture of achilles tendon are excellent. All casesshowed excellent radiologic and functional outcomes. Modified Bosworth technique alonedoes not always provide reliable fixation. Therefore, modified Bosworth technique and use of AO suture anchors and huo xue zhi tong san in chronic rupture of achilles tendon canensure a favourable outcome.
