ObjectivesTo understand epidemiologic characteristics of the patients with Salmonella infection in Guangdong, Henan and Shanghai from2009to2011; to determine the distribution of Salmonella serotypes in the three provinces; To analyze antimicrobial resistance pattern of the Salmonella strains isolated from the diarrhea patientsMethodsWe collected information from sentinel hospitals in Guangdong, Henan and Shanghai, including monitoring year, and number of specimens. Foe each strain, we collected patient’s name, sex, age, time of onset, sampling date and serotype. Antibiotic susceptibility of the strains were determined according to international standard.A variety of functions EXCEL2007were applied to summarize the information of isolates and susceptibility information database; SPSS was used to do descriptive analysis and chi-square test.ResultWe received2837Salmonella isolates out of64258patients from136sentinel hospitals in Guangdong, Henan and Shanghai during2009-2011. The overall isolation rate was4.4%,5.4%for Shanghai,4.2%for Henan, and3.6for Guangdong respectively. Salmonella isolation rates in summer and autumn were higher than the rates in the other time of the year. Salmonella isolation rates of MCH (7.9%) and Children’s Hospital (7.1%) were higher than Comprehensive medical institutions (4.1%).Guangdong, Henan, Shanghai reported3526Salmonella isolates including689Salmonella isolates isolated from the samples from the sentinel hospitals that never reported the number of sampls during2009-2011, of which3501were grouped into112serotypes, accounting for99.3%of the total number. The top two serotypes were S. Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis, accounting for61.1%of the total number. The main constitution of serotypes slightly differed by time, region and population.A total of3487Salmonella isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility with11antibiotics.65.4%of the isolates showed different levels of antibiotic resistance. Resistance was found for all the antibiotics.52.3%of the isolates were multi-drug resistant, with a total of223multi-drug resistant spectrums. The number of the top10multi-drug resistant spectrums accounted for57.8%of the number of the multi-drug resistant isolates. The most common multi-drug resistant spectrum was AMP+STR+GEN+TCY+CHL+NAL+TMP.ConclusionThere are regional differences of the Salmonella isolation rate in Guangdong, Henan and Shanghai. Salmonella isolation rate was higher in summer and autumn than other time of the year. Salmonella isolation rates of MCH and Children’s Hospital were higher than Comprehensive medical institutions. Salmonella serotypes in the three provinces were diverse. The most common serotypes were S. Typhimurium and S. Enteritidis. Currently Salmonella isolates are very resistant in the three provinces, and many of them are multi-resistant.We recommend to enhance the Salmonella and antimicrobial resistance surveillance,to use of antibiotics properly and to explore appropriate measures for antimicrobial resistance control in China; We recommend the Salmonella surveillance system should connect with China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention, achieve data information unified management by using the existing hardware and software, and collect more information of diarrhea pathogen from China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention.
