ObjectivePrevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among the staff of governmental agencies and institutions in Shanghai was examined and related risk factors were analyzed based on database of the health check at Huadong Sanatorium in 2011 in order to provide the evidence to develop effective interventional approach to health management for the targeted population.Methods1870 individual health files including medical examinations and laboratory tests without names were summarized into Excel 2003 databases, and then some simple analysis and logical proofreading were conducted.SPSS 18.0 software was employed to do this statistical analysis.ResultsThere were 1913 individuals from the governmental agencies and institutions in Shanghai went to Huadong Sanatorium to receive the health check in 2011, and 1870 individuals with complete data were selected as the research subjectes. Among them there were 1613 males and 257 females. The average age was 54.5 years old, and 73.85% (1394 individuals) of them had the age of over 50 years old.The result of the present study showed that the order of the prevalence rate from high to low is hepatic adipose infiltration(61.28%), hyperlipidemia(60.30%),thyroid nodule(54.59%),overweight(42.17%), hypertension (37.65%) and hyperglycemia (24.91%), which was significantly higher than that in the general population. In terms of the lifestyle factors, the results showed that smoking rate (25.93%) was lower but drinking (45.73%)rate was higher than the general population. The males preferred to eat food with more oil and sweet than females. Lower prevalence of physical activities in the age groups of 40-49 years old and 50-59 years old compared to that in the 60 and over years old.The subjects expressed that they felt high mental pressure.ConclusionThe prevalence of NCDs among the staff of the governmental agencies and institutions in Shanghai were significantly higher than the general population. The risk factors of the NCDs in the special population were characterized as higher drinking rate, higher in-taking rate of oil and sweet food in the males, lower rate of physical activity in the younger age groups, and higher mental pressure. The unhealthy life behavior and habits would be the cause of high prevalence of NCDs. it is recommended that we should focus on the intervention to lifestyles through the health education for these special population to improve their health.
