Background Extracorporeal shock wave therapy is widely used in the field of rehabilitation. But its mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Objective Explore the mechanism of action of extracorporeal shock wave therapy, Comprehensive evaluate the application of extracorporeal shock wave in the field of rehabilitation. Methods To collect researches from June 2002 to December 2013 by computer, from CKNI, VIP, Wanfang, CBM, Pubmed, OVID, APS Journals, Engneering Village, ScienceDirect Journal, SpringerLink of extracorporeal shock wave for rehabilitation. Each database were searched both in English and Chinese. Chinese Search terms are as follows:Radial Shock wave态Focused Shock wave, Extracorporeal shock wave, Shock wave Therapy, Shock wave Treatment; The corresponding English search terms are Radial Shock wave, Focused Shock wave, Extracorporeal Shock wave, shock wave therapy, shock wave treatment. Results total of 125 retrieved researches, retaining 85 for review, exclude 40 researches,30 researches for shock wave lithotripsy,10 for shock wave mechanical maintenance. Conclusion Currently, most of the studies confirmed that as a rehabilitation treatment, extracorporeal shock wave have played a key role in the muscles and soft tissue diseases and bone and joint diseases and some other diseases as well. Its effectiveness have been confirmed experimentally. But when we use high-energy shock wave, we shall pay attention on its side effect.
