Objective:To discuss the therapeutic effect of zoledronic acid in combination with PKP on vertebral compression fracture. Methods:We analyzed the clinical data of the patients with vertebral compression fractures and received PKP in our department from 2012-2014.Thirty-nine patients were followed up. According to with or without the application of zoledronic acid after PKP, the patients were divided into control group and experimental group. Clinical analysis included VAS index; the vertebral body height restoration (anterior/posterior edge) was evaluated radiologically on the injured vertebrae and its adjacent vertebre in 1 day、half a year and one year after PKP.Results:Patients in control group exhibited decreased vertebral body height (anterior/posterior edge) on the injured vertebre and its adjacent vertebrae half a year after PKP. This phenomenon was enhanced one year after PKP. After treatment with zoledronic acid in combination with PKP for half a year and one year, the height loss in the anterior/posterior edge of injured vertebrae was less than the control group.(P<0.05). After combination treatment for half a year, the loss in the anterior edge height of the lower vertebral body was significant less compared with control group (P<0.05), while posterior edge height of was similar to the control group (P>0.05).The combination treatment didn’t restore the height of the upper vertebral body compared with the control group (P>0.05). The back pain was released and the VAS score was significantly decreased in the experimental group compared with the control group. No new vertebral fractures were observed. Conclusion:The clinical efficacy of zoledronic acid combined with PKP in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures is significant. The application of zoledronic acid can evidently restored the height of injured vertebrate and its adjacent vertebral body. Besides, it also can relieve bone pain of the total body and the thoracolumbar vertebrae effectively. The administration of zoledronic acid is easy. The adverse events are slight and its compliance is good. It can achieve the purpose of systematic treatment, which is a better adjuvant therapy in osteoporotic fracture patients after PKP.
