Part one: The Thickness Changes of thebilateral Abdominal Muscles inDifferent Sitting Postures in SubjectsObjective The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the thickness of the transversus abdominis muscles(Tr A) and internal oblique(IO) muscles in three sitting postures with different levels of stability. The technique of ultrasound imaging was used for bilateral Tr A and IO of individuals.Metheds A sample of 30 people participated in this study. Changes in the thickness of tested muscles were normalized under three different sitting postures(sitting on a chair with back, sitting on a chair without chair, sitting on a gym ball) to actual muscle thickness at rest in the supine lying position and were expressed as a percentage of thickness change. Results The percentage of thickness change in Tr A and IO increased in subjects, the bilateral Tr A and IO had no difference in the percentage of thickness change. Conclusion Tr A and IO were very significant to ajuste the balance of healty individuals. And the bilateral abdominal muscles were symmetric。 Part two: The Thickness Changes of the Abdominal Muscles in Different Sitting Postures in Subjects with HemiplegiaObjective The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the thickness of the transversus abdominis muscles(Tr A) and internal oblique(IO) muscles in three sitting postures with different levels of stability. The technique of ultrasound imaging was used for individuals with and without hemiplegia.Metheds A sample of 60 people participated in this study. Subjects were categoried into two groups:with hemiplegia(N=30) and without hemiplegia(N=30).The two groups were matched with age, height and weight. Changes in the thickness of tested muscles were normalized under three different sitting postures(sitting on a chair with back, sitting on a chair without chair, sitting on a gym ball) to actual muscle thickness at rest in the supine lying position and were expressed as a percentage of thickness change. Results The percentage of thickness change in Tr A decreased as the stability of the sitting position decreased in subjects with hemiplegia but in IO was no significant difference. The percentage of thickness change in Tr A and IO increased as the stability of the sitting position decreased in subjects without hemiplegia. There was a significant difference in thickness change in Tr A when sitting on a gym ball and sitting on a chair with and without back between subjects with and without hemiplegia but no difference was found in IO in different sitting position. Conclusion The percentage of thickness change in Tr A increased in subjects without hemiplegia, however, decreased in subjects with hemiplegia.
