Objective Based on the description of epidemic characteristics of overweight / obesity among higher vocational college students, we analyze the etiological association between subjective evaluation, objective evaluation of physique and unhealthy dietary behaviors in order to provide evidence for the intervention of unhealthy dietary behavior. Methods Three colleges’ students were recruited by cluster sampling from Anhui Province and self-administered questionnaire were used to collect data. The questionnaire included demographic variables, body mass index(BMI), self rating type and diet related behavior variables. We used the software of Epi Data3.02 for creating database, the SPSS10.0 software package for statistical data analysis. The object of study was evaluated by subjective evaluation and objective evaluation of two methods. Subjective assessment by the study self assessment, represented by self rating type variable values, including "very thin or thin", "medium" and "partial fat or fat" 3 class. Objective evaluation index by using the BMI packet, the packet of standard working group China obesity promulgated the "China adult overweight and obese BMI screening criteria".Results According to the BMI standard, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was 6.3%, 13.1% for male and 3.3% for female with significant difference. According to the self rating type, the prevalence of overweight and obesity was 21.2%, 23.2% for female and 16.8% for male with significant difference. According to the BMI standard, self rating type of very thin or slim belong to the light weight of 55.7%, 43.8% for normal weight, 0.5% for overweight or obesity; self rating medium-sized group belongs to the light weight of 20.8%, 77.28% for normal weight, 2% for overweight or obesity; self rating overweight / fat group belongs to weight ratio of 1.9%, 74.1%% for normal weight, 24% for overweight or obesity. there were significant differences in BIM Standard Division(c2=1218.872,P<0.001). Kappa consistency test showed significant difference between body image perception and BMI(Kappa=0.2825, P<0.01). The prevalence of bad dietary behaviors was 51.4%, 58.5% for female and35.7%% for male with significant difference(c2=1218.872,P<0.001). The prevalence of unhealthy weight control behaviors was 18.6%, 18.9% for female and 18.0% for male with no significant difference. Logistic regression analysis of unhealthy dietary behaviors showed that overweight / obesity is only the risk factors of diet control for boy(OR=1.61, 95% CI: 1.01, 2.57) in different BMI group. However, in accordance with the self rating type grouping, partial fat / fat is the risk factors of 6 kinds of unhealthy dietary behavior included unhealthy weight control behaviors, gluttony, diet control, using of medicine or tea of reducing weight, and secretly eat in the group of assessment bodily form. Conclusions According to BMI standard, the prevalence of overweight and obesity of male was higher than female, but the prevalence of female was higher than that of male. The significant inconsistencies existed between self body evaluation and BMI type assessment. Body self evaluation is the main factors of unhealthy dietary behaviors among vocational college students, especially in female group.
