Objective Trigeminal neuralgia(TN) is one of the common and intractable diseases in oral and maxillofacial region. Trigeminal neuralgia is divided into primary trigeminal neuralgia and secondary trigeminal neuralgia. The etiology of primary trigeminal neuralgia has not been completely revealed. There are many hypothesis and assumption. This study was to explore the changes of interleukin-1β(IL-1β), interleukin-6(IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) in the patients with trigeminal neuralgia and contrast its significance. Methods 30 cases of primary trigeminal neuralgia patients from January 2013 to September 2014 coming from oral and maxillofacial surgery department in the Anhui province Stomatological Hospital and Anhui Hefei Xinmin Hospital were as trigeminal neuralgia group. Those patients were selected in accordance with the seventh edition of the oral and maxillofacial surgery trigeminal neuralgia diagnostic criteria, including 13 males, 17 females. Seventeen patients with clear diagnosis of malignant tumors were as control group of cancer, including 8 males, 9 females; Seventeen patients with periodontal or periapical inflammation were as control group of inflammatory, including 7 males, 10 females; Twenty healthy patients were as healthy controls, including 9 males, 11 females; Control group patients were all from Anhui Province Stomatological Hospital and Anhui Provincial Hospital. Fasting venous blood 5 ml was collected from all groups patients in the early morning, then centrifuged by a cryogenic centrifugal(4°C, 3500 r/min, 10 min), and separated the serum stored at a- 70 °C refrigerator. The levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in serum were measured in 30 patients with TN, 17 patients with cancer, 17 patients with general inflammation and 20 healthy people bythe enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) respectively. The ELISA tests were done according to the ELISA kit shown in the operating steps, and then the results were drawing standard curve. According to the optical density in the standard curves, the proinflammatory factor levels were checked, which were carried on the statistical processing. Results The peripheral venous blood serum levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in the TN group were significantly higher than those in the all control group(P < 0.05). However there were no significant differences between the groups of cancer patients and inflammatory patients. Conclusion The peripheral venous blood serum levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in the patients of TN are enhanced which suggests that IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α are related with the pathogenesis of TN.
