Objectives: This article is to investigate major types and incidences of mental disorders in the Armed forces recruits, analyze the changes in the constituent ratios of 5 principal mental disorders in different years and to explore the differences of mental disorders in the Armed forces recruits in different areas.Methods:Mental disorders of 153122 recruits in several units of the Armed forces from 2013 to 2014 were screened during the period of basic military training usingthe personal Perception Test System(PPTS).Results:1 386 cases with mental disorders were found, and the overall prevalence rate was 0.252%.2 The top five mental disorders with the highestprevalences included: mood disorder(0.069%), adjustmentdisorder(0.058%), mental retardation(0.034%), schizophrenia(0.024%), and neurosis(0.018%).3 In comparison to 2013, the constituent ratios of mental disorders during screening the Armed forces recruits changed in 2014: the percentage of people with mental retardation basically remained the same(0.136%), that of people with mood disorder increased, and that of people with adjustment disorder decreased but adjustment disorders are of high incidence. The percentages of people with schizophrenia and neurosis decreased significantly.4 The incidences of mental disorders in recruits vary in different areas, including the five areas of the highest incidence rate: Beijing(6.63‰), Shanxi(4.40‰), Yunnan(4.39‰), Jiangxi(4.03‰), Shanghai(3.92‰). The lowest incidence rate of mental disorders is 0.24‰ in Tibet.Conclusions:A certain percentage of people in the recruits have suffered mental disorders. The changes in the constituent ratios of mental disorders should be paid more attention to. Meanwhile, the systems used for screening mental disorders need the further optimization and improvement.
