ObjectiveThe purpose of this research was to investigate the influence of Midnight-noon-ebb-flow method to the recovery of gastrointestinal function after abdominal surgery and to contrasted with the conventional acupuncture to see the differences of the two methods on the recovery of gastrointestinal function as well as to explore a better method to promote the recovery of gastrointestinal function after abdominal surgery, in order to offer a better service to the postoperation patients.MethodPatients were assigned randomly by using the envelope method to receive normal acupuncture therapy and Midnight-noon-ebb-flow acupuncture therapy. The patients were selected from the gastrointestinal surgery department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, who received Laparoscopic appendectomy during March 2014 to January 2015. All the patiants received the therapy on the first day after the operation and was treated by acupuncture during 8:00 am to 11:00 am, once a day, for two days. If a patient received the operation during 0:00 am to 8:00 am, as long as the patient recovered from unconsciousness before 8:00 am, the acupuncture therapy would be done on the very operation day. Acupuncture use Tian Xie brand disposable sterile acupuncture needles. The normal acupuncture group according to the conventional method use Acupoint Zusanli, Shangjuxu, Xiajuxu, Sanyinjiao for treatment, while the Midnight-noon-ebb-flow acupuncture group use the the midnight noon ebb flow time point first before the 6 normal acupoints, the same with the normal group. Both methods contained the same electric stimulation. The electric stimulators were made by Qingdao Xinsheng and the type was G6805-type I. Collected and observed the basic information of the patients, the operation time, bleeding volume, postoperative white blood cell count, postoperative first exhaust time, postoperative first defecation time, the channel value before and after the treatment and the number of bowel sounds before and after each acupuncture.ResultsComparison of the first exhaust time after operation, the treatment group was significantly shorter than the control group and the difference has statistical meaning (P<0.05).Comparison of the time of first defecation after operation, the treatment group and the control group showed no significant difference (P>0.05)Comparison of channels value of the two groups were all increased and the channels value had obvious difference within each two groups (P<0.05), but no obvious difference between the two groups (P>0.05)Comparison of bowel sounds around the first acupuncture, both groups showed significant difference within group (P< 0.05), but no obvious difference between the two groups (P>0.05)Comparison of bowel sounds around the second acupuncture, the treatment group showed significant difference within group (P<0.05), while the control group showed no significant difference within group (P>0.05), but no obvious difference between the two groups (P>0.05)Conclusionboth Midnight-noon-ebb-flow acupuncture therapy and normal acupuncture therapy can promote the patients’recovery of gastrointestinal function after the laparoscopic appendectomy. The Midnight-noon-ebb-flow acupuncture therapy has the advantage of promoting postoperative exhaust when compared with normal acupuncture therapy.
